Sacramento Assemblyman Dave Jones said today that he will run for state insurance commissioner in 2010.
Jones, a Democrat, was elected last week to his final two-year Assembly term. He said he hopes to fill the statewide insurance commissioner post likely being vacated by prospective GOP gubernatorial candidate Steve Poizner.
Jones confirmed his intentions in a phone interview this morning and said he would release a formal statement later today.
Jones said his candidacy has been endorsed by state Controller John Chiang and incoming Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento.
A former Sacramento city councilman, Jones served this year as chairman of the Assembly Judiciary Committee. Moving up to the state Senate would be difficult for Jones in 2010 because Steinberg presumably will run for a second term to represent the area.
