Gay rights activists – still reeling from the passage of the statewide ballot measure banning same-sex marriage – hope to gather 10,000 supporters for a rally today at the state Capitol in Sacramento.
If attendance estimates prove correct, it would be one of the largest rallies at the Capitol since protests against the Vietnam War.
Comedian Margaret Cho, attorney Gloria Allred and state Sen. Darryl Steinberg, D-Sacramento, are slated as featured speakers at the 2 p.m. rally.
Sacramento activist Tina Reynolds said voters' approval of Proposition 8 was a wake-up call for many people within the gay and lesbian community and their supporters.
"Up until Prop. 8, things have been steadily moving toward true equal rights," Reynolds said. "Prop. 8 threatens to take everything away."
The rally comes just days after the California Supreme Court agreed to consider whether the measure improperly revises the state constitution.
A decision on that legal challenge could come as early as June.
