California's lawmakers cutting back, voluntarily

Twenty-four of 120 Senate and Assembly members voluntarily have cut their $116,208 salaries as the state wrestles with a huge budget shortfall.

18 percent cut

• Sen. Abel Maldonado, R-Santa Maria

• Sen. Alan Lowenthal, D-Long Beach

• Assemblyman Mike Eng, D-Monterey Park

10 percent cut

• Sen. Lou Correa, D-Santa Ana

• Assemblywoman Joan Buchanan, D-Alamo

• Assemblyman Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo

• Assemblyman Roger Niello, R-Fair Oaks

• Assemblyman Ira Ruskin, D-Redwood City

• Assemblyman Bill Berryhill, R-Ceres

7.75 percent cut

• Assemblyman Ted Gaines, R-Roseville

5 percent cut

• Sen. Dave Cox, R-Fair Oaks

• Assemblyman Mike Villines, R-Clovis

3 percent cut

• Sen. Jeff Denham, R-Merced

• Sen. Christine Kehoe, D-San Diego

• Sen. Gloria Negrete McLeod, D-Chino

• Sen. Mark Wyland, R-Solana Beach

• Assemblyman Jim Beall, D-San Jose

• Assemblywoman Jean Fuller, R-Bakersfield

• Assemblywoman Cathleen Galgiani, D-Livingston

• Assemblyman Martin Garrick, R-Solana Beach

• Assemblyman Ed Hernandez, D-West Covina

• Assemblyman Ted Lieu, D-Torrance

• Assemblywoman Fiona Ma, D-San Francisco

• Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, D-La Cañada-Flintridge

PER DIEM

Other lawmakers have turned down the $173 per diem payments – totaling about $35,000 a year, tax-free, for most lawmakers:

• Assemblywoman Alyson Huber, D-El Dorado Hills

• Assemblyman Dave Jones, D-Sacramento

Note: Sen. Dave Cox, R-Fair Oaks, accepts per diem but says he donates it to charity.

Seventeen lawmakers declined the state car allowance offered to legislators:

• Assemblyman Brian Nestande, R-Palm Desert
