Bob Walter: Citrus Heights community band faces busy month

Published: Thursday, Sep. 11, 2008 - 12:00 am | Page 1F

Band in demand: It started as a one-trick pony. Intrepid Citrus Heights musicians Kathy Cook and Linda Glover needed a marching band for the city's Red, White and Blue Parade in June of 2005.

They cobbled together theoriginal Citrus Heights Community Marching Band, which has grown into a permanent and polished troupe that will play "nine or 10 parades this year," said trumpet player and perpetual band booster Linda.

The next month or so will be especially busy for the band, starting with Saturday's free "Concert in the Park" at Pioneer Park, 5100 Verner Ave.

The marching band will warm up the crowd at 3:30 p.m. for John Skinner's Fabulous Band.

Bring lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic, or buy refreshments at the show, sponsored by county Supervisor Susan Peters and the Sunrise Parks and Recreation District.

The event also will feature a climbing wall and face painting, presumably for kids.

Also on the marching band's dance card: Sunday Fun Day in Rusch Park on Sept. 28 and San Juan High School's 95th anniversary all-class reunion/picnic on Oct. 4, also at Rusch.

More on the reunion another day.

Interested in playing and marching with the band? See below. …

History comes alive: Want a close-up look at some prime Fair Oaks artifacts – including a special exhibit of Fire Department items donated by retired Capt. Carl Reese – and plenty of expertise as well?

Then hit Sunday's Open House at the History Center, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Fireside Room at the Fair Oaks Community Clubhouse, 7997California Ave.

I can testify that the Fair Oaks Historical Society's center is worth a visit, and correspondent Trude Peterson Vasquez promises that friendly and knowledgeable docents will explain everything you see, and much more.

For more information, or to schedule a student tour, call Lois Frazier, chief of docents, at (916) 967-2967 or visit www.fairoakshistory.org. …

Band, Part II: As always, Linda and Kathy and the marching band directors are looking for new instrument-carrying musicians – you must be 12 or older, but you don't have to live in Citrus Heights.

There is no fee for the Sunrise Recreation and Park District's band class, which meets on Monday nights at San Juan High School and will rehearse at least through October this year.

For more info, call Kathy (916) 725-0198 or Linda at (916) 725-5214.
