Navy Seaman Recruit Vladimir Coltisor and Navy Seaman Apprentice Travis O. Peterson have recently graduated from basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, the seamen completed a variety of training, including classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety.

An emphasis also was placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations," designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of honor, courage and commitment.

Its distinctly "Navy" flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a sailor, according to a press release.

Coltisor is the son of Carmen J. and Ion Coltisor of Citrus Heights.

Peterson is the son of Laura L. and James R. Peterson of Fair Oaks, and is a 2008 graduate of Del Campo High School in Fair Oaks.

Army Cpt. Marc McAnally, son of Franca Lingren and stepson of Ron Lingren of Fair Oaks, is serving in the 111th Maneuver Enhanced Brigade for the New Mexico National Guard.

McAnally began his military career in the Marines in 1993 and served five years active duty and three years in the Marine Corps Reserves. He also is a Desert Shield veteran.

After the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, McAnally looked to go back into the military, according to a press release.

In January 2002, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, and in 2005 was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for wartime combat missions and upon return home, he received a letter of recognition from Rep. Dan Lungren, R-Gold River, and also was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for outstanding service.

McAnally is a 1991 graduate of Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks.

Here are some rules of the road:

• Keep your comments civil. Don't insult one another or the subjects of our articles. If you think a comment violates our guidelines click the "report abuse" button to notify the moderators. Responding to the comment will only encourage bad behavior.

• Don't use profanities, vulgarities or hate speech. This is a general interest news site. Sometimes, there are children present. Don't say anything in a way you wouldn't want your own child to hear.

• Do not attack other users; focus your comments on issues, not individuals.

• Stay on topic. Only post comments relevant to the article at hand. If you want to discuss an issue with a specific user, click on his profile name and send him a direct message.

• Do not copy and paste outside material into the comment box.

• Don't repeat the same comment over and over. We heard you the first time.

• Do not use the commenting system for advertising. That's spam and it isn't allowed.

• Don't use all capital letters. That's akin to yelling and not appreciated by the audience.

You should also know that The Sacramento Bee does not screen comments before they are posted. You are more likely to see inappropriate comments before our staff does, so we ask that you click the "report abuse" button to submit those comments for moderator review.
