Turkey cook-off contest to help feed the homeless

Published: Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008 | Page 2B

Homeless men, women and children will feast on turkeys prepared by top area restaurants in a turkey cook-off competition Monday.

The annual event – started by Councilman Rob Fong last year – will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at 1901 S St.

The turkeys will be judged for tenderness and flavor and then donated to Loaves & Fishes, city officials said.

Loaves & Fishes, a nonprofit organization, hopes to secure 200 cooked turkeys each year for its Thanksgiving meal.

"For many of our folks, this is the only Thanksgiving meal, and we are their only family," said Sister Libby Fernandez, executive director of Loaves & Fishes.

Participating restaurants in the cook-off include Jamie's Bar & Grill, Hangar 17 Bar & Grill, The Water Boy, Zocalo, Aioli, Fox & Goose, Center Court with C-Webb, Buckhorn Grill and Riverside Club House.

Interested restaurants should contact Jessica Equihua at (916) 808-5241.
