The wreckage of a small airplane returning to the Sacramento area from Idaho was found in a rugged area of the Sierra Nevada near Lake Tahoe, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office reported Tuesday.
Searchers discovered the wreckage in the Desolation Wilderness southwest of Lake Schmidell. A man’s body was found outside the plane. The Sheriff’s Office said the coroner would have to identify the remains.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the missing single-engine Cessna, manufactured in 1960, is registered to Tyrell Kremer of Wilton.
The plane was reported missing Saturday evening, but a search was called off Sunday and Monday because of stormy weather.
The Sierra Nevada and much of Northern California were hit with heavy rain and gusty winds the last few days. Snow fell on mountain passes and flash-flood warnings were in effect in areas burned by recent wildfires.
