SACRAMENTO A Sacramento man suspected of being the "straw hat bandit" has been charged in seven bank robberies in Sacramento County and one in San Joaquin County, federal authorities said.
Michael Edward Osgood, 47, appeared Wednesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Edmund F. Brennan in federal court, according to a news release from the office of U.S. Attorney McGregor Scott.
Authorities said the robber was so nicknamed because surveillance photos showed him wearing a wide-brim straw hat in several of his heists.
Osgood was arrested June 9 after allegedly fleeing from the U.S. Bank at 3320 Arden Way in Sacramento.
The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office on Tuesday dismissed state charges against Osgood in favor of the federal prosecution, authorities said.
