Bee reporter faces pornography charge

WOODLAND – Yolo County prosecutors have charged a Sacramento Bee employee with possession of child pornography.
The District Attorney's Office filed a criminal complaint Tuesday against longtime business reporter Gilbert Chan, 52, of Davis. The complaint alleges a single felony count of possessing obscene matter depicting sexual conduct of a person under 18.
The charge stems from a Feb. 3 incident at the UC Davis Activities and Recreation Center, according to campus police. A witness observed Chan videotaping a youth cheerleading competition with a camera he was trying to conceal and alerted an officer at the event, said UC Davis Police Lt. Nader Oweis.
The cheerleaders range in age from 6 to 18, he said.
Chan was not arrested at the time but further investigation, including review of the videotape, led to the charge being filed by prosecutors, Oweis said.
Chan was not on duty at the time of the incident. Reached at home, Chan declined comment and referred questions to his lawyer, Steven Sabbadini, who could not be reached Thursday.
A warrant for Chan's arrest was signed by a judge Thursday, and Oweis said he expected Chan to turn himself in today.
Bail has been set at $50,000, he said, and the investigation is ongoing.
The charge carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison. It also can be reduced to a misdemeanor.
Chan has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation, said Linda Brooks, The Bee's vice president of human resources.
