Former Elk Grove administrator to lead San Juan school district

Published: Friday, Jul. 25, 2008 - 12:00 am | Page 3B

A former Elk Grove Unified administrator will assume leadership of the San Juan Unified School District on Sept. 1.

Patricia Jaurequi, superintendent of the New Haven Unified School District in Alameda County, signed a three-year contract with San Juan on Thursday. Her annual salary will be $230,000.

Board President Rick Launey said the 57-year-old South Carolina native's varied background and strong administrative experience made her stand out in the pool of 20 applicants.

"She also is a wonderfully bright person and is very, very knowledgeable," he said. "She is a wonderful communicator, and that's an important (asset)."

Trustees approved Jaurequi's contract in a 5-0 vote.

Before joining the 13,000-student New Haven district four years ago, Jaurequi worked in several administrative positions in the Elk Grove Unified district office between April 1996 and September 2004. During that time, the district swelled to 56,000 students. San Juan Unified serves about 42,000.

San Juan trustees began their search after former Superintendent Steven Enoch announced in May that he would leave at the end of June. Enoch, whose salary was about $200,000, is now at the helm of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District.

Jaurequi said she is humbled to be chosen to lead San Juan Unified, which she said faces great challenges but also boasts great strengths.

She described herself as a collaborative leader.

"My job, as I see it, is the facilitation of the highest hopes, dreams and aspirations of the community and the school district," she said.
