SACRAMENTO Luther Burbank High School is being celebrated by the Sacramento City Unified School District after recently receiving word that the campus no longer has "Program Improvement" status under the federal No Child Left Behind law.
Burbank administrators, teachers and students were recognized by the school board last week for their work in exiting program improvement status.
The south Sacramento school initially was believed to be in the fifth year of program improvement, meaning it would have to begin dramatic restructuring.
But after a mistake was identified by school staff and confirmed by the state Department of Education, Burbank received confirmation that the school had met all its targets.
Superintendent Maggie Mejia noted that Burbank's achievement is particularly impressive, given the challenges of the school's population. About half the students are English language learners, and more than 75 percent come from impoverished families.
Mejia called the school a "role model."
Principal Ted Appel said the accomplishment is not an end to Burbank's success, but a "marker on the road" as the school continues to improve.
