The superintendent of San Juan Unified School District has been offered a position as head of San Ramon Valley schools but said Wednesday that he has not yet accepted.
Steven Enoch, who came to San Juan Unified in July 2005, said he still is negotiating the job offer and likely will accept if it comes together as he expects.
"We're close, but we're not quite there yet," he said Wednesday afternoon.
Enoch said his contract at San Juan is three years from expiring. He is paid about $200,000 a year. The salary for the San Ramon Valley Unified job is $240,000.
Enoch said he never pressured his board of trustees for higher pay.
"I know my salary's been a little low," Enoch said. "But I've also been mindful we've had declining enrollment and tough financial times in the district, so I thought it was inappropriate."
Enoch said the deal with San Ramon likely won't be finalized until next week.
San Juan Board President Rick Launey commended Enoch for his work raising test scores, stabilizing district finances and infusing technology into schools.
Launey described Enoch as energetic, hardworking and "exceptionally talented."
"We certainly hate to see Steve leave. He is an excellent superintendent," Launey said. "We wish the best for him."
