The body of a Florida man was recovered about 8 p.m. Monday by an El Dorado County sheriff's dive team in the University Falls area of Pilot Creek, near Quintette, east of Georgetown, a sheriff's spokesman said Tuesday.
The area contains a series of pools and waterfalls, with the last one featuring a steep drop, said Sgt. Bryan Golmitz, spokesman for the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office. The site is remote and a popular hiking destination, especially for locals who are aware of its location, Golmitz said.
The drowning victim was identified as Robert Allen Knox, 24, of Northport, Fla.
He was hiking and swimming with friends from Orangevale. Knox evidently lost his grip on a rope that has been placed alongside the last pool so swimmers can pull themselves out of the stream, Golmitz said. He struck his head on a rock and fell, Golmitz. The incident occurred late in the afternoon Monday and his companions had to travel out of the area to get a cell phone signal, Golmitz said.
A dive team reached the site about 8 p.m. and Knox was found in about 12 feet of water, wedged into rocks at the bottom of the stream, Golmitz said.
