Healthy fun: The good folks at Folsom's Powerhouse Ministries are cramming a whole lot of help and fun into three hours on Sunday at Powerhouse headquarters, 705 Wales Drive.
Powerhouse, of course, has offered food, shelter, counseling and myriad other services to families of prisoners and families in crisis for almost 20 years.
On Sunday, families from throughout Folsom and Orangevale are invited to a unique triad from 2 to 5 p.m. a health fair, family fun fair and a chance to sign up for holiday gifts through the Angel Tree program.
All for free, promises Powerhouse spokeswoman Julie Selecman.
The health fair, co-sponsored by the California Wellness Foundation, offers dental screenings, nutrition demonstrations, fingerprinting of youngsters, treats from Yogurt Delite and information from Women, Infants and Children, or WIC.
The fun part will feature bounce houses, including one for preschool kids, games, prizes and a free barbecue lunch for the whole family. The fair also will include a children's clothing boutique where families will be offered clothes and jackets at no cost.
Last, but maybe best we have an Angel Tree program at my church in Elk Grove families can sign their kids up for Christmas gifts through Angel Tree. The gifts which are received by hundreds of children every year will be presented at a special event Dec. 13 at Oak Hills Church.

Party time in Old Folsom: Sutter Street will turn into one big stage at 5 p.m. Sept. 27 for the fifth edition of "Folsom LIVE."
It promises to be quite an evening 15 bands on indoor and outdoor stages throughout the historic district, along with the Folsom Breakout Car Show that was added this year.
Also added this year is a highlight that might even get me out of Elk Grove on a Saturday night Jim Messina, who started with Buffalo Springfield and Poco before becoming half of Loggins & Messina. Yeah, he started when the Earth was cooling, but he can still play and sing.
Rock semi-legend Pablo Cruise also will be headlining, along with the Dave Russell Band, the Bootie Shakers, Hip Service, the Spazmatics and Whiskey Dawn. All in all, they promise every kind of music from new country to vintage rock 'n' roll.
Tickets are $30 in advance online and $35 on LIVE day. They can be purchased online at www.folsomlive.com, the Folsom Chamber of Commerce, Folsom Visitors' Centers, Powerhouse Pub and Dimple Records.
Tickets also will let you park for free at any Regional Transit 18 park-and-ride lots in the region. RT also will run extended light-rail service to the historic Folsom station every 30 minutes until 11:30 p.m.
Whew 11:30 on a Saturday night counts as extended service, eh? But I digress.

A short break: By the time you read this, I will be on the tail end of my annual fishing, camping, golfing and gaming holiday on the other side of the Sierra. So no column next week.
Enjoy your break. I will be back in this space Oct. 2. Stay tuned. And cheers.
