El Dorado County's animal shelter will be allowed to remain in temporary quarters on Placerville Drive at least two more years, despite concerns that it occupies potentially valuable retail space.
The Placerville Planning Commission earlier this week agreed to extend the conditional use permit for the shelter until January 2011. County Animal Services remodeled a 5,800-square-foot building at 511 Placerville Drive in 2007 to house cats and dogs until a new animal shelter can be built southwest of the city. That project has been delayed due to design issues and may be further postponed because of county budget constraints.
Commission member Carol Anne Ogdin said she appreciated the county's situation but was concerned about county facilities in areas of the city zoned for commercial use. She noted that they don't generate sales-tax dollars.
"If all of our commercial (land) were leased out to the county, we'd have no income base," she said.
But fellow commission members said the site probably would not be in great demand for commercial use, given the current state of the economy.
Commission member Les Russell said there are a number of vacant commercial properties in the Placerville Drive and Broadway business districts.
"I would hate to see this vacant, too, if we evicted the county," he said, in supporting the permit extension.
