Veteran Northern California car dealer Larry Winkler plans to reopen the recently closed Placerville Ford dealership in early to mid-December.
After prolonged speculation about its survival, the dealership at 126 Forni Road along the southern edge of Highway 50, just west of downtown Placerville was closed down last month, putting more than 40 people out of work.
No formal statement was issued on the closure, and Winkler declined Thursday to discuss the dealership's past concerns.
He did, however, talk about the future.
"We're going to try to make it a success and grow the business and pull back as many of those people as possible who worked there," Winkler said. " ... I'm concerned about them. They lived in the area, and we're going to try to get them back."
Winkler said new and used Ford vehicles will be sold at the site, and he anticipated no major structural changes, other than the possible conversion of one building to a quick-lube operation.
Winkler is buying the dealership from Michael A. Mellow and Jim Blincoe, who purchased what was long known as Harrell's Placerville Ford in 2004.
Winkler was general manager of Dublin Ford in the Bay Area for 20 years. He also was a partner in Red Bluff Ford and owned Sebastopol Ford in Sonoma County for more than six years before selling it last year.
His pending purchase of Placerville Ford is in escrow and also must clear the assorted hurdles that accompany auto dealership purchases. That includes Ford Motor Co. ultimately signing off on the deal.
Winkler said he is already ramping up plans to restock the dealership's vehicle inventory and resume operations in the service department.
