The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation announced that it has awarded the second in a series of construction contracts for dam safety improvements at Folsom Lake.
The $3.2 million contract was awarded April 28 to DD-M Crane and Rigging of Alameda.
The program is intended to reduce the risk of water overtopping Folsom Lake's dams and dikes during an extreme storm event.
Modifications will be made to Dike 5, an earthen embankment between Dikes 4 and 6 on the north shore of the lake near Auburn-Folsom and Eureka roads in Granite Bay, according to a news release.
The work will include partial removal of the downstream face of Dike 5 to add features such as filters and drains to control erosion. The filters and drains will be constructed of materials that will be obtained commercially and brought on site by trucks. Supplemental material will be excavated from the site within the bottom of the reservoir close to Dike 5, the news release says.
Site preparation, including trail relocation, development of a contractor use area and installation of a contractor access off Auburn-Folsom Road will begin this month and continue until about Sept. 1. The primary construction work on Dike 5 is expected to begin after Labor Day, with completion in spring of 2009.
Some construction activities will be limited to certain times of the year to maintain dam safety, and operational and recreational requirements.
