Bob Walter: Welcome sign to grace water tower

Published: Thursday, Sep. 4, 2008 - 12:00 am | Page 1F

Looking up: That's what you should be doing right now if you are near Old Town Elk Grove. Look up at the landmark water tower that could have a flashy new paint job just about any day now, according to reader and Old Town advocate Phillip Stark.

Phillip said painter types were scoping out the lettering for the "Old Town Elk Grove" sign last week.

"It's still a go," Phillip said. "I was hoping it would be done by Sept. 1, but I don't have a paintbrush in my hand."

Stay tuned. …

Calling all shooters: Reader-correspondent Phillip was glad to hear that the city's Committee for the Arts and the Old Town EG Foundation have taken on the photo contest that he started a couple of years back.

The deadline to enter "Elk Grove Through Your Eyes" is Sept. 12, and the winners will see their photos featured in the city's 2009 calendar. The grand-prize winner also will receive $500 from the Old Town foundation.

Rules and such can be seen at www.elkgrovecity.org/arts. …

Great events: September is a big month for fundraisers, and two events for very good causes are coming up in the next week. At least they are on different days, so feel free to hit both of them.

Saturday is Harvest of Hope 2008, which benefits the EG Community Assistance Network – the food bank, clothes closet, Helping Hand and the community garden, among other noble programs.

Spokeswoman Michelle Orrock promises a memorable evening of great food and wine, live music, auction, a drawing and dancing. The event will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church, 9165 Peets St.

For more info or to buy tickets ($100 each), call (916) 826-2075 or e-mail harvestofhope2008@ hotmail.com. …

Events, Part II: The other special evening is Spotlight Elk Grove on Sept. 11 at the SES Hall, 10427 E. Stockton Blvd.

This one benefits the the Elk Grove Community Foundation, a quiet nonprofit that provided 184 scholarships to students from Elk Grove's eight high schools in 2008, a total of $168,000, and vows to give away even more next year.

Spokeswoman Elizabeth Pinkerton promises a spectacular Hollywood/New York-style (costumes are optional) evening of fine food, excellent wines and other beverages and many vendor booths offering free stuff. Everything is free, in fact, after you buy a $40 ticket.

Tickets are available at Raley's and Bel Air stores Elk Grove Bank of Commerce on Laguna Boulevard and from foundation directors. For more info, see the Web site at www.egcommunityfoundation.org/events or call (916) 685-7118.

Cheers. Twice.
