An Elk Grove High School student was named first runner-up in California's annual Poetry Out Loud competition, held in Sacramento recently. Poetry Out Loud is sponsored by the California Arts Council.
Daniel Horne read three poems, "Fever 103" by Sylvia Plath, "A Boat Beneath A Sunny Sky," by Lewis Carroll and "Mr. Edwards and the Spider," by Robert Lowell. As first runner-up, Daniel received $100 in prize money, $200 in poetry books for his school and a $75 gift card from Target. In the event the winner cannot compete, Daniel will represent California in the national competition in Washington D.C. in April.
Elk Grove High School Principal Cathy Guy said that California has the largest number of schools - more than any other state - participating in Poetry Out Loud. Eighty-seven new California schools participated in 2007-2008.
