The Cosumnes Community Services District will go to bid to build its new fleet maintenance facility.
The district board voted unanimously Tuesday to authorize district officials to solicit bids for the facility, which will be built at the district's fire training facility on East Stockton Bouelvard.
Plans call for construction of the $8.3 million project to begin in mid-July, with a target completion date of April 2009, said John Ebner, senior management analyst for the district.
The project consists of a 18,660-square-foot shop building for the district's fire department. A second building, a 7,702-square-foot annex, will serve as the temporary home for Station 78 and will include offices for fire administrative officials, according to a staff report.
Emergency services need to be in place when the Elk Grove Promenade opens next year. The district isn't able to build a permanent facility for Station 78 yet, because a lack of development in the area means less fees to help pay for a new station.
Fire department officials estimate that it will be at least four to seven years before the new fire station would be built.
General Growth Properties is developing the 1.1 million-square-foot open-air shopping mall at Grant Line Road and Highway 99. The mall is scheduled to open March 2009.
The annex building will be located next to the existing fleet maintenance building, which will be converted into a logistics and apparatus storage building.
Money for the $8.3 million project will come from fire impact fees, fire department capital reserves and developer fees from General Growth, the staff report said.
The $250,000 in developer fees from General Growth will be used to help fund the temporary fire station. The district plans to divide the remaining $500,000 cost of the temporary station between the district and M&H Realty Partners, which is developing land for commercial use next to the mall.
Ebner said negotiations are still going on with M&H.
The district is still working on buying a 1.3-acre site on Lotz Parkway from the Sterling Meadows developers for a permanent Station 78.
