Volunteers needed to help kids with shopping spree

Published: Friday, May. 16, 2008

Students from kindergarten to fifth grade need chaperones for a $100 back-to-school shopping spree sponsored by the Elk Grove Optimist and Mervyn's.

The staff of Elk Grove Unified's Healthy Start program are seeking volunteers to assist with the 16th annual ChildSpree event July 19 at the Elk Grove Mervyn's store at 9175 East Stockton Blvd.

The event is for students in need of school clothes, backpacks and school supplies. More than 100 students, who have been identified through Healthy Start, Project Act and Foster Youth Services, are expected to participate.

Chaperones will help students shop from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

Potential volunteers may contact Sandy Waite or Isabel Reynoso at (916) 392-9081, Joan Estepa at (916) 686-7764 or Diane Lampe and Carmen Flores at (916)422-1091.
