The San Francisco-based Commonwealth Club of California, the oldest public-affairs forum in the United States, has announced the winners of its 83rd annual California Book Awards:

Gold medals

Fiction: Karen Fowler for “We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves”

First fiction: Anthony Marra for “A Constellation of Vital Phenomena”

Nonfiction: Eric Schlosser for “Command and Control: Nuclear Weapons, the Damascus Accident, and the Illusion of Safety”

Poetry: Brenda Hillman for “Seasonal Works With Letters On Fire”

Juvenile: Marissa Moss for “Barbed Wire Baseball”

Young adult: Tom McNeal for “Far Far Away”

Californiana: Ronald M. George for “Chief: The Quest for Justice in California”

Silver medals

Nonfiction: Amy Wilentz for “Farewell, Fred Voodoo: A Letter From Haiti”

Poetry: Victoria Chang for “The Boss”
