Dress up and go play
What: Ten years’ worth of UC Davis Department of Theatre and Dance production costumes (that’s more than 500 outfits) are up for sale or rental in time for your Halloween celebration. Think 18th century French footmen coats, zombie kits, samurai lord and geisha, Glinda the Good Witch, and much, much more. Head-to-toe outfits and simple accessories are offered.
When: 3-7 p.m. today, Monday-Thursday and Nov. 1; 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, with silent auction winners announced at 5 p.m. Walk-in shoppers are welcome.

A visit to Middle-Earth
What: Fairytale Town’s Safe and Super Halloween event this year transforms the storybook park into the world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit.” Games, candy and photo opportunities will be at the ready. A costume parade will be conducted nightly.
When: 5-9 p.m. all three days; costume parade at 8:30 p.m.

Halloween Fair and Pooch Parade
Dog’s day out in midtown
What: Who says you can’t have scary fun while being healthy at the same time? The Midtown Business Association is partnering with California Food Literacy Center for a family- and dog-friendly Healthy Midtown Halloween. For canines, there’s a Pooch Parade and costume contest. For everyone else, there will be nutritious Halloween candy recipes, crafts, costume prizes and activities, including squash bowling and pumpkin decorating, and trick-or-treating at locations throughout the Sutter District of midtown.
When: 3-6 p.m.; parade at 3 p.m.

Never fear – there’s beer
What: The second annual Pumpkin Smash Bash fundraiser features adult trick-or-treating for beer, unlimited pumpkin smashing, a costume contest and the opportunity to haunt the museum. This is a 21-or-older event.

Boo-bowling with the family
What: Fun-seekers from ages 1 and above are invited to Capitol Bowl for an afternoon of family fun for the Monster Mash. (It’s been confirmed that last year’s mash was a graveyard smash.) With The Sneaky Tikis, the Rockabilly Love Cats, and the Lava Pups providing the music.
When: 1-4 p.m.

Halloween Nerd Night
Awaiting the witching hour
What: Some folks would put “nerd” in the realm of unstylish and uncool, but then some folks don’t get it, do they? The folks at the Bows & Arrows Collective have proved they get it. They promise a night of food, film and fantasy in which you can show off your costume, play spooky games and see what unfolds as the night progresses.
