The city's animal shelter is hosting a free event Sunday featuring food, face painting, live music and children's games.

The Haunted Open House will take place from noon to 4 p.m. at the shelter, 2127 Front St.

Guests are encouraged to bring cans or bags of dog and cat food to benefit the shelter's Titanic Food Bank for needy pet owners.

But the ultimate goal, said shelter manager Gina Knepp, is to find good homes for as many shelter animals as possible.

Knepp said the shelter is full of dogs and cats of all sizes and breeds.

"I've got poodles, terriers, shepherds, Labs, a whole variety," she said, along with many felines.

Sunday's event will feature free hot dogs, cotton candy, snow cones, popcorn, coffee and ice cream; a children's bounce house; a haunted house; products from local vendors; and live music by Roni and the Flight.
