For the second year in a row, the Sacramento region has been shut out of the Amgen Tour of California, organizers announced Tuesday.

The eighth edition of the road cycling race next year will cover about 750 miles from May 12 to May 19. The 2013 route will travel from Southern California to Santa Rosa – the first time the race has traveled from south to north.

Sacramento was left out in 2012, too. The event, which features some of the top cyclists in the world, included the Sacramento area in five of its first six years.

The loss of the race will hurt Sacramento's economy. Some 50,000 fans attended the race in 2011, generating an estimated $3.7 million in hotel and restaurant business.

May 12: Escondido

May 13: Murrieta to Greater Palm Springs

May 14: Palmdale to Santa Clarita

May 15: Santa Clarita to Santa Barbara

May 16: Santa Barbara to Avila Beach

May 17: San Jose (time trial)

May 18: Livermore to Mt. Diablo

May 19: San Francisco to Santa Rosa
