Running for health and exercise is virtuous, but sometimes you just want to pin on a bib number and race against hundreds of others. Here’s our weekly best bet for races of various lengths and surfaces.
City Beer Runs – Alameda 10K, 5K
When: 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28
Where: Faction Brewing, 2501 Monarch St., Alameda
Reason to Run: The motto of City Beer Runs, which hosts weekend races at craft beer joints around the Bay Area, is “Run Hard, Live Easy.” They might as well add, “Drink Up.” The drinking comes after the “race,” we presume.
Quarry Turkey Half-Marathon, 10K, 5K
When: 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28
Where: Quarry Lakes Regional Recreational Area, 2100 Isherwood Way, Fremont
Cost: $77 (Half); $61 (10K); $54 (5K)
Reason to Run: It qualifies as a trail race because most of the course is dirt fire roads. But there aren’t any hills (227 feet of elevation gain in the half marathon), so you can post some fast times.
Jingle Bell 5K
When: 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12
Where: Crocker Park, 211 O St., Sacramento
Reason to Run: People are encouraged to dress as Santa and tie bells to their shoelaces for this fast, flat 5K downtown and along the riverbank.
