Running for health and exercise is virtuous, but sometimes you just want to pin on a bib number and race against hundreds of others. Here’s our weekly best bet for races of various lengths and surfaces.
Super Sunday Run 10K/5K
When: 9 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 7
Where: College Town Drive, near Sacramento State; finish at Hornet Stadium
Reason to run: It’s cool to finish a race inside a stadium. Here’s your chance – on Super Bowl Sunday, no less. People often dress in football jerseys for this race. Not aerodynamic, but who cares?
Jed Smith Ultra Classic 50-Mile, 50K, 30K, Half Marathon
When: 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6
Where: American River Parkway, Watt Avenue access
Cost: $70 (50-mile); $60 (50K); $45 (30K); $40 (half-marathon)
Reason to run: It will be the 38th running of this ultra, sponsored by the Buffalo Chips Running Club. It’s neither a trail ultra nor a road ultra. It’s a parkway ultra, run on both crushed granite and asphalt and a few dirt paths. If you want to compete against the really speedy runners, try the 50-mile.
Shamrock’n Half Marathon/5K
When: 7:45 a.m. March 13
Where: Raley Field, West Sacramento
Cost: $70 through Feb. 12
Reason to run: Shamrock’n is another Sacramento area race that’s turning into a tradition. Expect some speedy pro runners up front (last year’s winners: Malcolm Richards at 1:06:34; Jane Kibii at 1:14:56) but there are several waves for slower runners. Half-marathon too long? Try the 5K at the same location the day before.
