Running for health and exercise is virtuous, but sometimes you just want to pin on a bib number and race against hundreds of others. Here’s our weekly best bet for races of various lengths and surfaces.
Run Rocklin Half Marathon/12K/5K
When: 8 a.m. Sunday, April 10
Never miss a local story.
Where: Johnson-Springview Regional Park, 5480 Fifth St., Rocklin
Cost: $55 (half), $35 (12K and 5K)
Reason to run: This is the 13th running, so it’s starting to become one of the area’s venerable races. What separates it from other road half marathons is that there’s actual climbing involved (675 feet) on a crazy loop course.
Ayala Cove 15 Mile/10 Mile/5Mile
When: 9:50 a.m. Saturday, April 9
Where: Angel Island (ferry from Tiburon departs 9 a.m.)
Cost: $55 (15-mile), $45 (10-mile), $40 (5-mile)
Reason to run: How often do you get a chance to encircle the island just east of the Golden Gate Bridge? Plus, your warmup is the ferry ride. By the way, you must pay $16 for that service.
Pony Express Marathon/Half/5K/Relay
When: 7 a.m. May 1
Where: Capitol Mall, Sacramento
Cost: $150 (marathon), $70 (half), $235 (relay), $40 5K
Reason to run: Ever since the late, lamented Cowtown Marathon shrunk to a half, we’ve been waiting for a second road marathon to grace Sacramento. It is here. This race, mostly along the Sacramento River near Raley Field and Land Park, seems even flatter than the California International Marathon. Yes, it’s USATF-certified, for those trying for a Boston Qualifier.
