Running for health and exercise is virtuous, but sometimes you just want to pin on a bib number and race against hundreds of others. Here’s our weekly best bet for races of various lengths and surfaces.
Folsom Firecracker 10K, 5K
When: Saturday, 7:30 a.m. (10K), 7:45 a.m. (5K)
Where: 145 Parkshore Drive, Folsom
Reason to Run: You might not get a PR at this run, because there are – the horror! – a few slight hills and a little bit of dirt path when not on the Lake Natoma bike trails. But it’s a beautiful run with lake views.
Truckee Firecracker Mile
When: Saturday: 9:45 a.m. (elite start); 9:55 a.m. (fun run start)
Where: 10995 Donner Pass Road, Truckee
Reason to Run: There’s a movement afoot called “Bring Back the Mile,” meaning mile races both on the track and road. This event at Truckee draws hundreds, and not just because its course is dubbed as “gravity fed” – slightly downhill. Times are fast. Course records: male: 4:18.1 by Nicholas Fresenko, of Canton, Ohio; female: 5:00.8 by Tina Oprean, of Kings Beach.
Rancho Cordova 4th of July 5K
When: 9 a.m. Saturday
Where: Mills Middle School, Rancho Cordova
Reason to Run: The course goes along the town’s Fourth of July parade route, so there will be lots of people lining the streets to cheer you on. No hills on this course. No downhills here. Flat as day-old soda. Plus, with registration, you get two free passes to the fireworks celebration.
