Kudos to: Ava Sackman, Roseville third-grader

Accomplishment: Donated 400 pounds of dog food, 32 bags of dog treats and dog toys

Details: For her 9th birthday, Ava didn’t ask for presents. Instead, she wanted to gather and donate the dog loot to Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue in Elverta.

Kudos to: Scott Simmon, UC Davis English professor and film scholar

Accomplishment: Received Film Heritage Award from National Society of Film Critics

Details: He received the honor for his anthology on DVD “American Treasures from the New Zealand Film Archive.” The American films are from a cache of nitrate prints that had been safeguarded in New Zealand and not seen for decades.

Kudos to: Beckett Lee, senior at Western Sierra Collegiate Academy

Accomplishment: Presented National Defense Committee ROTC certificate and bronze medal from Sutter Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution

Details: Lee will attend Yale University where he plans to study political science before becoming a career Navy officer. He hopes to eventually seek elective office. Lee is the fifth generation in his family to serve in the Navy.
