Applause: Kudos to Armando Porras, Andri Tambunan and Crocker Art Museum

Armando Porras, an electrical engineering major with a 4.0 GPA, emigrated from Mexico to California as a 6-year-old. He says that the College Assistance Migrant Program helped him achieve his college aspirations by introducing him to students with similar high goals. CAMP provides academic advising, tutoring and counseling to children of migrant workers. Porras received the national migrant education award.

Accomplishment: Grand prize winner of Activist Awards

Details: The award recognizes outstanding documentary photography done on behalf of nonprofits. Tambunan’s winning photo essay investigated the causes of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Papua, Indonesia, documenting struggles and triumphs.

Kudos to: Crocker Art Museum

Accomplishment: Won AICA-USA award

Details: Crocker received the award for best thematic national show outside New York for “An Opening of the Field: Jess, Robert Duncan and Their Circle.” The exhibition revealed the complex interplay between poetry and art in the midcentury Bay Area cultural scene.
