Kudos to: Fifth-grade teacher Lisa Liss and students at Woodlake Elementary School
Accomplishment: Tile mural created to honor Anne Frank
Details: The mural consists of 72 tiles, painted by students and local mixed-media artist Felicia Borges. The tiles include each student’s favorite passage from the young Holocaust victim’s diary and their vision of her life story.
Kudos to: Jayden Coleman and Chadwick Bangal, Samuel Jackman Middle School students
Accomplishment: Winners of math curriculum fantasy baseball tournament
Details: More than 1,000 students participated in the tournament. The effort uses baseball to shed light on science, technology, engineering and math concepts that are sometimes difficult to grasp.
Kudos to: United Way’s Women in Philanthropy
Accomplishment: Collected hundreds of towels, toiletries and luggage for foster youth.
Details: The women have a long history of helping youth in foster care prepare for a successful adulthood.
