Kudos to: Nicholas Leal, Whitney High School student

Accomplishment: Perfect attendance from kindergarten through 12th grade

Details: He has been involved in band, football and theater productions in addition to always being there for roll call. He plans to attend Cal Poly.

Kudos to: Sierra Ferguson, fourth-grader at Cowan Elementary School

Accomplishment: Winner of California heritage essay contest

Details: Sierra was the winner – out of 1,442 essays submitted by 52 classes at 21 schools in the Sacramento area – for the “History in a Trunk” program. The event was hosted by the Assistance League of Sacramento at the old governor’s mansion.

Kudos to: Project Linus

Accomplishment: Volunteers make thousands of blankets for children in need

Details: In 1997, the “blanketeers” made 35 blankets for a few local hospitals. Last year, Project Linus donated more than 9,000 blankets to local children’s organizations.
