Applause: Kudos to Robert Halseth, Carla Kakutani and Andrew Solano

Robert Halseth, Sacramento State music professor, won the award for music educator on the year. The award from the Capitol Section of the California Music Educators Association caps a half-century in teaching. Halseth has been the university’s director of bands since 1993 and also serves as music director for the Sierra Nevada Wind Orchestra.

Kudos to: Dr. Carla Kakutani, family physician

Accomplishment: California Academy of Family Physicians named her family physician of the year

Details: Honored for 25 years of serving rural Winters in Yolo County. Kakutani moved to Winters in 1989, bringing medical services, including obstetrics, gynecology, primary, preventive and mental health care.

Kudos to: Andrew Solano, senior at Roseville’s Woodcreek High School

Accomplishment: Won 2014 speech contest held by Rotary District 5180, which stretches from Oroville to Elk Grove.

Details: Solano first won the local speech contest held by Rotary Club of Roseville, then the area contest before advancing to district finals.
