Kudos to: Ya’Shalan Nelson, Sacramento State student

Accomplishment: Grand prize winner of video contest

Details: Nelson was winner of Your Roadmap to Success video contest sponsored by Higher One, a company that partners with universities to improve graduation rates. The videos were judged on quality, creativity, clarity and completeness.

Kudos to: Michelle Bebout and Susan Walden, San Juan Unified School District teachers

Accomplishment: San Juan’s teachers of the year

Details: Bebout teaches ninth-grade English at Casa Roble Fundamental High School in Orangevale. Walden teaches in the third-grade Rapid Learner program at Deterding Elementary School in Carmichael. Both veteran teachers use student performance data to tailor instruction and personalize learning for all students.

Kudos to: Caliber Collision and Nationwide Insurance

Accomplishment: Donated a repaired vehicle to a man rebuilding his life

Details: Caliber’s Recycle Rides program partners with insurance companies to refurbish and donate vehicles to people in need. Employees of Caliber, a collision repair company, volunteer time to fix the vehicles. Nationwide donated the vehicle that was given to a once-homeless veteran in Sacramento who recently found work and a place to stay.
