• DEADHEADING AT DAYBREAK
Learn about the Historic City Cemetery’s world famous rose collection while doing a little summer maintenance. Help volunteers remove spent blooms (deadheading) and other tasks. Bring your own gloves; other tools and training will be provided. Late-risers welcome; the work will continue through most of the morning (until it gets too hot).
• IRIS SALE
In this one-day sale hosted by the Sacramento Iris Society, find rhizomes (roots) for hundreds of colorful (and drought-resistant) bearded iris including dwarfs, intermediates, tall and repeat bloomers – at just the perfect time to plant them. Lots of different colors and varieties will be available as well as advice on how to plant. New this year is a labeling station that will allow buyers to prepare a permanent garden label for each iris purchased before they leave (and forget what they got).
• WATER-WISE GARDENING DAY AND PLANT SALE
Water-wise herbs, succulents, natives and perennials will be offered during this open garden at the historic Gibson House. Tour its newly renovated herb garden. Learn how to make your own succulent garden. Master gardeners will answer questions. At 11 a.m., Warren Roberts, superintendent emeritus of the UC Davis Arboretum, will lead a walking tour of historic trees on the Gibson House grounds.

Native plants make beautiful and water-conserving additions to home gardens. Get ideas (plus tips on when and how to plant them) on this walking tour of the UC Davis Arboretum’s Mary Wattis Brown Garden of California Native Plants.
