DEAR CAROLYN: Our daughter is 12. My sister-in-law is crazy about her, but she’s also overbearing and controlling. Our daughter doesn’t like to spend time with her, which hurts us to no end. I would like them to have a real relationship.

Carolyn Hax: It’s the least magical time of the year

DEAR CAROLYN: I hate Christmas. I mean really, really hate it. I hate the expectations that are put on me: put on the family dinner because my mother’s health doesn’t allow her to do it anymore. Watching her and her husband drink too much. Figure out how much money to give the kids because they don’t want presents, they only want money. (Yes, my daughter told me to just give her the money I would have spent on presents so she can go on a cruise with her friends.)

Hints from Heloise: Don’t let candles burn all the way down

DEAR HELOISE: I have burned candles for years and never had a problem until last week. I had a candle in a glass container and wanted to finish burning it. It was sitting on a lace runner. The candle burned out, scorched the runner and also the wood beneath the runner. It was not unattended, but I wasn’t watching it at all times. A warning to others: Even though it is in a glass container, if it burns out, the glass can become hot enough to do damage. You probably should blow them out before they burn to the bottom of the glass.

Carolyn Hax: He refuses to spend the holidays with her parents

DEAR CAROLYN: The dreaded holiday season is almost upon us and I’m compelled to ask for advice: How do I deal with my husband’s unwillingness to spend time with my family? We’ve been together 15 years. He’s never really liked my parents. I’ve had issues with them, too, (what child doesn’t?), but they are my parents, and I love them. They live on the other side of the country, so I don’t see them nearly as often as they would like – once a year at most.

DEAR CAROLYN: Is it typical for moms to complain about no one helping them with housework, then, when someone does do something, to chase them off and/or criticize how they do it?
