Inside the Cal Expo pavilions, thousands of dogs competed over four days, culminating in Sunday’s event. Other than the sporty diving dogs and barn hunt competitions held outside, there were obedience competitions and conformation competitions, which judge how closely a dog meets the American Kennel Club’s standards for the breed.
After bolting from Alec Nygard’s Cameron Park home earlier this month, a tiny pup named Rosemary somehow wound up 40 miles away at the Sacramento County animal shelter. Someone else adopted her, but Nygard wasn't going to give her up without a fight.

Gaston, named after a character in "The Beauty and the Beast," is a cat the size of a barge with a big heart to match, the Front Street Animal Shelter says, but no one has adopted him and he's getting lonely at the shelter. So, the shelter came up with this video and song to help him out. While he's large, the shelter says Gaston just needs exercise and a special weight loss diet to get back to normal.
A spunky cat, who so badly damaged his leg that it had to be amputated, is well on his way to recovery – coping well to walking on three legs instead of four. Troika apparently tried to jump a chain-link fence at a Placer County school. He didn’t quite make it.
The annual roundup of flamingos at the Sacramento Zoo on Thursday, March 16, 2017, allowed a team of UC Davis veterinarians, technicians and veterinary students to examine and treat the big birds, perhaps the best-known residents of the zoo. They flapped and squawked but ultimately took their medicine.
