Escapes: Oxnard Salsa Festival celebrates both the dance and the dip

Get your toes and your taste buds ready for some serious heat.
The annual Oxnard Salsa Festival runs July 27-28 and offers music, dance and, of course, food with plenty of picante.
This annual celebration also features top entertainment and draws around 45,000 attendees to the two-day celebration, according to organizers.
Highlights include salsa music and Latin jazz bands, a tasting tent featuring more than 75 different salsas, a vendor marketplace, chef demonstrations and a salsa recipe contest.
It's at Plaza Park in historic downtown Oxnard from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days.

Friends of the Monterey Museum of Art will be presenting a special talk titled "Yes, but Is It Art?" given by Will Bullas, described by organizers as a popular artist and champion of humor in art.
Bullas has exhibited twice with the National Academy of Design in New York.
The talk will take place at 10:30 a.m. May 8 at the Monterey Museum of Art, 720 Via Mirada, Monterey.
Admission is $10 for museum members and $15 for nonmembers.

Mother's Day celebration
Pamper mom with fresh flowers and high tea.
The Ruth Bancroft Garden in Walnut Creek has a special event lined up for Mother's Day, May 12, that includes garden tours as well as tea and crafts. Complimentary family portraits will also be available.
Tours of the garden begin at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. The Mother's Day tea party starts at noon and includes individual tea boxes with sandwiches, salad and sweet treats.
Tea boxes cost $15 for adults and $10 for children.
The party takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Ruth Bancroft Garden, 1552 Bancroft Road, Walnut Creek. Reservations are required: (925) 944-9352.
Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for students and seniors. On Mother's Day, moms and children under 12 are admitted free.
Cinco de Mayo celebration
Old Town Auburn's May 5 event will offer music, food, vendors, piñatas, dancing, and family activities.
The activities, running 5 and 9 p.m., include a salsa-making contest with local restaurants competing for salsa bragging rights.
