Escapes: Block out some time for Cannery Row

Celebrate the summer, sea and (John) Steinbeck with a block party at Monterey's popular Cannery Row.

The 10th annual block party will offer live music, wild animal shows, circus performers, face painting and balloon artists.

Bands playing at Steinbeck Plaza include the Duvets (pop rock), Elliot Randall & the Dead Men (country pop) and Steep Ravine (bluegrass/Americana).

Great train robberies

What: The Wild West roars back to life when Roaring Camp Railroads holds its "Great Train Robberies" re-enactments this summer on its steam trains. Performances includes shootouts and skirmishes between lawmen and outlaws.

When: Trains depart Roaring Camp for Bear Mountain at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m June 16 and July 4. On Aug. 31, Sept. 1, 2, trains depart at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Where: 5401 Graham Hill Road, Felton.

Cost: $26 adults and $19 children (2-12 years) for steam trains and $28 adults and $22 children (2-12) for beach trains. Parking is $8 per car.

Otter pups on exhibit

What: Three male otter pups are now on exhibit at the Oakland Zoo. They were born in February. At birth, each pup weighed 0.3 pounds, but now they weigh around 4.5 pounds each. The pups are named Kohana, Hinto and Shilah.

When: Daily, 10 a.m-4 p.m.

Where: Oakland Zoo, 9777 Golf Links Road, Oakland.

Cost: Zoo admission is $15.75 for adults and $11.75 for children.

Winery Walk, Rock and Run

What: The Monterey County Vitners and Growers Association presents a 5-mile walk at the Paraiso Vineyard. The walk will support the Bill Petrovic Memorial Scholarship Fund for children whose parents work in agriculture. The event will include live music, trivia, food and Monterey County wines.

When: June 29. Registration begins 9 a.m. Walk starts 10 a.m.

Where: Paraiso Vineyards, 38060 Paraiso Springs Road, Soledad

Cost: $100 per walker, $30 per spectator
