Marine mammal education

Head to the Marine Mammal Center’s ocean-themed classroom next Sunday for a free lesson on our watery world.

At various times between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., you can catch interactive, multimedia presentations about animals in the arctic or enjoy a docent-led tour of the facility. Learn about the center’s residents, volunteers and rescues, and wave to the seals and sea lions from the observation deck.

Star theater

What: Stargaze in the comfort of the indoors. The Fleischmann Planetarium at the University of Nevada, Reno, celebrates its 50th anniversary with $1 admissions on all its educational, audiovisual weekend programming. Discover black holes, supervolcanos and proton collisions in 3-D.

When: Show times vary, Saturday and next Sunday

Fiery fashion

What: For a night of one-of-a-kind pieces of wearable art, attend The Crucible’s hotly anticipated annual fashion show, “Hot Couture: The Fusion of Fashion & Fire.” The collaboration between Bay Area fashion designers and industrial artists leads to a haute couture runway of music, dance and fire.

When: 7-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday

Where: The Crucible, 1260 Seventh St., Oakland

Cost: $40 general admission, $100 VIP



Environmental film festival

What: Films, art and workshops will all focus on energy at the 12th annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival. Expect to see pieces about nature, community activism, conservation and more, and be inspired to act. Don’t forget the art and wine stroll, fancy gala and late-night dance party.

When: Show times vary, Thursday through next Sunday

Where: Various theaters in downtown Nevada City and Grass Valley

Cost: $120 basic festival pass, $60 youth pass, $20-$40 individual film screenings



Travel guide talk

What: Pauline Frommer, daughter of Arthur Frommer, will discuss the relaunch of the Frommer brand and its 30 new travel books, as well as her award-winning “Pauline Frommer Guidebooks” series. The presentation and question-answer session will likely cover travel tips, trends and destinations for the new year.
