Current films are reviewed each week to provide parents a guide to decide what may be appropriate to younger viewers
Guardians Of The Galaxy
Rating: PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and for some language
What it’s about: A motley crew of rogues and losers breaks out of space jail to save the galaxy from an alien overlord bent on mass murder
Never miss a local story.
The kid attractor factor: Wild-looking aliens, lots of action and cool spaceships and such. And for the tiny tykes? A talking/wisecracking raccoon.
Good lessons / bad lessons: “Everybody’s got dead people. That’s no excuse to get anybody else dead.” Let it go, in other words.
Violence: Plentiful, cartoonish; this has a body count and the violence has no real consequences.
Language: Scattered moments of profanity
Sex: Flirtation only
Drugs: Not really
Parents’ advisory: A mostly family friendly – and funny – comic book adaption, suitable for age10 and up
Get On Up
Rating: PG-13 for sexual content, drug use, some strong language, and violent situations
What it’s about: James Brown’s musical gifts, business savvy and unpleasant personal demons are documented in this musical biography.
The kid attractor factor: If you listen to music, you’re listening to the influence of James Brown.
Good lessons / bad lessons: “Walk in the jungle, sometimes you get bit by a snake.”
Violence: Child abuse, domestic abuse, a prison brawl, clumsy gunplay
Language: Some profanity
Sex: Flirted with, nothing explicit
Drugs: Yes, some abuse
Parents’ advisory: Kids need to learn the funk – suitable for 12-and-up.
