Ronan will play a Sacramento high school senior in the drama, which will mark the solo directing debut of screenwriter and actress Greta Gerwig, a Sacramento native and St. Francis High School graduate.
Gerwig co-wrote and starred in the 2013 film “Frances Ha,” a portion of which was shot in Sacramento’s River Park neighborhood. In that film, Gerwig’s New York City aspiring-dancer character briefly returns home to Sacramento.
Gerwig co-directed the 2008 film “Nights and Weekends” with Joe Swanberg.
Ronan will vie for lead actress at the Feb. 28 Academy Awards ceremony for her performance in “Brooklyn” as a young Irish immigrant in 1950s New York City. Ronan is considered a favorite for the Oscar, just behind front-runner Brie Larson (“Room”), who is from Elk Grove.
Hollywood producer Scott Rudin also is attached to “Lady Bird.” Rudin produced “Frances Ha,” which was written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach and directed by Baumbach.
