The City of Trees music festival is saying goodbye to Gibson Ranch and scooting to the home of Sacramento Republic FC. Bonney Field at Cal Expo will host City of Trees, headlined by alternative-rock favorites Weezer, on Sept. 10.
The move comes following a troubled first year for the festival at Gibson Ranch in August. While the musical lineup of Cake, Of Monsters and Men and others were well received by the crowd of 9,000, the show was marred by traffic jams, a lack of lighting in the parking lot and overflowing garbage cans.
Gibson Ranch, the 325-acre park in Elverta, was also the site of massive traffic gridlock during October’s Monster Energy Aftershock Festival. Some concertgoers reported being stuck in the parking lot for more than two hours.
Bonney Field seeks to host more musical acts. A stage was acquired for the stadium both to serve concerts and VIP seating at soccer games. As a music venue, Bonney Field is capable of holding up to 12,000 attendees.
Along with Weezer, City of Trees will include performances by Panic! At the Disco, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness and others.
