Reno's Artown has been called one of the country's premier events since its inception 13 years ago. It's certainly one of the longest, largest and most diverse.
It lasts through July, it features more than 350 events and exhibitions, and it covers all the arts. Best of all, more than 60 percent of the events are free.
Individual event tickets go on sale Thursday at www.renoisartown.com. Last year's overall attendance exceeded 350,000.
Opening night, July 1, is always a party, and this year everyone can join the MarchFourth Marching Band's parade from McKinley Arts Center on Riverside Drive at 7 p.m. to downtown's Wingfield Park. Or one can simply await the arrival of the band and watch its performance in the park, along with ballroom dancing by the cast of the Eldorado's "Floor Play" and the aerial artistry of the Heliosphere.
The Artown closing night, July 31, will feature the Harlem Gospel Choir in Wingfield Park at 8 p.m.
Ticketed events include:
Jazz at Lincoln Center, when Wynton Marsalis pays tribute to American music July 5 at the Grand Sierra's Grand Theater.
Mandy Patinkin sings accompanied by Paul Ford on piano July 15 at Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts.
Andrew Bird brings some contemporary taste to the festival July 16 at the Grand Sierra, playing his blend of gypsy, folk, rock, German lieder and New Orleans jazz.
Sara Juli brings her "Money Conversation" to the Redfield Studio Theater at the University of Nevada July 22-26.
Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, one of contemporary dance's most innovative and prestigious companies, performs July 26 at the Pioneer Center.
