Air Force Airmen Jacob C. M. Woodel, son of Ed and Robin Woodel of Placerville, and Ruben A. Mullins, son of Robert Mullins of South Lake Tahoe, have graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

During the six weeks of training, the airmen studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies, performed drill and ceremony marches and also received physical training, rifle marksmanship, did field training exercises and received special training in human relations.

In addition, the airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Mullins earned distinction as an honor graduate.

Woodel, a 2004 graduate of Horizon Charter School of Lincoln, is a 2007 graduate of San Joaquin Valley College in Rancho Cordova, where he received an associate degree.

Mullins is a 2004 graduate of Golden Sierra High School in Garden Valley.

Navy Seaman Apprentices Andrew Con- treras, Donald J. Hicks and Taylor J. Phillips have completed basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, they completed a variety of training including classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis also was placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations," designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of honor, courage and commitment.

Contreras is the son of Angela A. Brown and Phillips is the son of Kelly L. Sones, both of South Lake Tahoe. Contreras and Phillips are 2004 and 2005 graduates, respectively, of South Tahoe High School in South Lake Tahoe.

Hicks, the son of Sharon H. Hicks of Rancho Cordova, is a 2007 graduate of Folsom High School.

Army Pvt. Laura M. Bywater, granddaughter of William Murdock of Folsom, has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and did field training exercises.

Bywater is a 2005 graduate of Martin Luther King Jr. High School in Riverside.
