The prized banjo that Folsom police and a Portola Valley businessman have been hunting for over a month has been recovered and it will soon be back in the hands of its owner.
The 1931 Vega Vox III was stolen out of Jim Pollock's sport utility vehicle on June 30, prompting an ongoing investigation and the posting of a $5,000 reward by Pollock. On Thursday, Folsom police released surveillance photographs of a man and a woman who had tried to pawn the banjo recently at a Sacramento pawn shop. Pollock also raised the reward to $10,000.
Publication of those photos evidently broke the case open, said Bill Windle, a family friend and Folsom-based private investigator, who has been helping Pollock since the banjo went missing.
Sacramento attorney Daniel A. Nicholson and Nicholson's private investigator, Robert Dick, contacted Pollock over the weekend. They had acquired possession of the banjo somewhat mysteriously and wanted to basically ransom it back to its owner.
"I have it in the trunk of my car," Windle said. "I find the whole thing pretty distasteful. I feel that people should get a reward for returning found property but in this case the property was known to be stolen."
Nicholson was tight-lipped about details during a brief telephone interview early Monday afternoon.
Money evidently did change hands but he declined to state how much. "The nature and identity of my clients is confidential," Nicholson said. "There was a posted reward of $10,000."
Folsom Police Detective Jon Lasater also confirmed that the banjo has been recovered. He said the case is not closed.
