Folsom residents may see a large police presence today and Friday at Folsom Lake College and hear gunshots or loud explosions as officers take part in an "active shooter" training exercise.
"For this training to be effective as possible, we will create an environment as realistic as we can to ensure the participants get an idea of the chaos and unpredictability involved in one of these situations," said Folsom Police Sgt. Eric Heichlinger in a press release issued earlier today.
Folsom police officers will be joined by Los Rios Community College District police.
The training is designed to give officers the realistic training necessary to attack and, if necessary, kill a person or group of people attacking a school, shopping center, office building or similar institutional setting.
The goal is to actively prepare for an event that officers hope will never happen, said Police Chief Sam Spiegel.
Police officials have determined that the standard police tactic of forming a safe perimeter and waiting does not work in many situations.
