A concrete retaining wall along one side of a mosque under construction in Folsom will not be bare for long, a mosque backer said in response to criticism that the wall is ugly.
The plan is for the wall - which fronts well-traveled Sibley Street - to get a stucco finish, with stone veneer across the bottom, that will match the color and finish of the mosque itself, said Rafi Saied, a volunteer with the Folsom Islamic Society.
"(It) is a retaining wall and is a requirement from the city," he said. "We will get to the aesthetics part after the building is done."
A reader told The Bee that a city employee told her the wall would remain bare. Saied said that was wrong.
The mosque, slated to be finished this year, will be a striking addition to Folsom's skyline with a dome-shaped building and a tall minaret.
The mosque has drawn some criticism as being inappropriate for the area and a security risk, but the public support and curiosity have been far greater.
