Sacramento area fire officials are mailing at least 1,000 notices to property owners regarding the need for defensible space and mowing of vegetation that can contribute to what is expected to be tough wild land fire season.
Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District and Cal Fire officials are designating Monday as the official start of the summer fire season.
They are recommending that property owners clear a minimum of 30 feet around all homes and other structures and note that 100 feet of clearance will be even better. They also caution against doing all that mowing and cutting in the heat of the day when sparks from grass mowing and brush cutting equipment can actually start a fire.
Property owners should also have a hose or water bucket close at hand.
